BUYING FURNITURE HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER – HERE’S PINTEREST’S AR TRY ON FOR HOME DÉCOR

Pinterest has always been a place for inspiration. Pinterest is taking its AR shopping options to the next level, with a new ‘AR Try-On for Home Décor’ process, which will enable users to virtually place furniture in their home.

As explained by Pinterest:

“This is our latest step in bringing together the worlds of augmented reality and shopping on Pinterest as people seek more immersive online experiences that help them make purchase decisions from the comfort of their home. Try-On for Home Decor makes it possible to envision home decor and furniture items in your home and “try before you buy” from premier launch partners.”

The approach makes use of Pinterest’s continually expanding AR Lens technology to determine the virtual object’s true dimensions and characteristics in order to create an accurate representation of how it will appear in our real-world location.

The Try-On features detect objects in the real world and translate them into online suggestions based on object recognition, in-stock products from catalogs, and the Pinner’s preferences. Pinners can then alter the product in the camera view to evaluate how it fits in their space and how well it matches their current decor.

This update is the first of its kind from Pinterest and is designed to make decorating easier and more accessible to everyone. Furniture, on the other hand, is a popular topic on Pinterest. 90 percent of Pinners come to the site for research and inspiration in their home decor shopping trip, according to the company’s own research, so the ability to preview how these goods would appear in their house before making a purchase may be a major deal for the app.

If Pinterest gets it right, it might be an extremely significant tool in the broader eCommerce revolution, helping to cement Pinterest as the go-to spot for online purchasing.

META JUST LAUNCHED IMPROVED 3D AVATARS AND THEY ARE COMING TO INSTAGRAM AS WELL

The metaverse is approaching — not quite yet, and not for a long time, but it is coming, and Meta is eager to take control of the next stage and ensure that it remains important in future iterations of the web as we know it, as the name suggests.

Last week, Meta announced an update to its 3D avatar creation process on Facebook and Messenger, as well as the ability to use unique avatars in Instagram Stories and DMs.

Meta’s new 3D avatars have more sophisticated features and customization options. The company is also introducing more inclusive customization features, such as Cochlear implants, hearing aids, and wheelchairs, allowing more users to represent themselves in its apps.

Since 2019, Meta has enabled 3D avatars as a feature in its primary app, allowing users to build a digital representation of themselves that can then be used in stickers, posts, replies, and other places. While some people got used to these characters, they haven’t taken off in a big way. Meta will be aiming to change that with this new expansion, which will also allow Instagram users to design their virtual self, as previously said.

As a result, new options for sponsored content will emerge. For example, you can dress your Avatar to support one of the two Super Bowl LVI candidates from now until February 28th, or you can choose a neutral Super Bowl LVI shirt if you can’t decide.

To the next generation of consumers, buying a new look for your avatar is second nature, and it is these consumers that are likely to encourage the metaverse transition, with Meta stating repeatedly that the broader metaverse vision will take several years, if not a decade or more, to begin to form.

SNAPCHAT JUST RENEWED ITS CONTENT DEALS WITH DISNEY, NBCUNIVERSAL, AND VIACOM

Snapchat has renewed its content arrangements with Disney, Viacom, and NBCUniversal, which will see exclusive series and programming aired to Snapchat Discover over the next year. The partnerships are yet another affirmation of Discover’s, and Snapchat’s, value in staying on top of consumer trends and connecting with the next generation of viewers.

Snapchat claims that these extensions demonstrate that Discover remains a critical platform for some of the world’s most well-known consumer media companies and that these deals demonstrate their long-term faith in Snap’s ability to provide meaningful results in terms of reach, relevance, and profitability.

Discover has been one of Snap’s biggest successes, with over 100 million Snapchatters turning in each month to view Discover content. Snap also revealed last year that in 2020, over 90% of the US Gen Z audience will be watching Discover shows and publisher content, and many Snap Originals will have tens of millions of viewers on average.

Shorter episodes, produced with the vertical device screen in mind, and collaborations with well-known celebrities who are eager to use Snap as a vehicle to retain touch with a wider audience, cater to changing consumer trends.

It’ll be interesting to observe how Snap’s Discover content evolves over the next few years if it does at all. The development of TikTok has ushered in a new era of digital consumption patterns, posing a challenge for the service. But, once again, the data demonstrate that Snap is on to something and that it can help these providers reach out to a younger audience.

And, as traditional consumption habits alter, all publishers are scrambling to figure out how to best align with that transition. Snapchat Discover is another option to consider, and it has the potential to be significant, particularly if Snap can continue to improve its features and stay a crucial connective platform for young people.

WHATSAPP’S NEW CAMPAIGN HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF ENCRYPTION

WhatsApp has launched a new promotional campaign to emphasize the importance of privacy for users, with an excessive example of how your unprotected messages can be retrieved, amid ongoing scrutiny over parent company Meta’s plan to implement full encryption by default across all of its messaging apps.

The lack of security surrounding SMS text messaging is equated by WhatsApp’s new ad campaign to someone being able to read your physical mail. Although this is a stretch, the emphasis does have some merit. You wouldn’t want others reading your mail, but text messages can be intercepted by third-party providers, which is similar in some ways.

Still, somehow, the timing is intriguing. At the moment, Meta is working to integrate all of its messaging services (WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram Direct) into one platform, allowing you to access your inbox from any of these applications on the other, as well as carry on chats with pals.

As a result, each of its messaging choices must now upgrade to full encryption, similar to what WhatsApp offers, in order to support equally secure chat across all platforms.

Almost every country’s government officials and law enforcement groups have expressed alarm about this move, which they feel will impair the capacity of criminal investigations. If no one can track or access these types of exchanges, either internally or externally, it effectively gives criminal organizations full, undetectable rein, allowing them to use Meta’s huge network to coordinate, mobilize, and share unlawful material without fear of repercussion.

This latest push from WhatsApp will undoubtedly feed those flames even more, and it will be interesting to watch if it leads to an increase in WhatsApp adoption.

SAY GOODBYE TO THE LINKEDIN LITE APP

LinkedIn has announced that LinkedIn Lite, a stripped-down version of the site meant for users in areas with limited internet and data access, will be shutting down.

LinkedIn Lite was first released in 2017 as an attempt to “level the playing field for all members when it comes to accessibility.” It has all of LinkedIn’s core features and is designed to load faster while consuming less data, making it ideal for areas with more limited data plans.

However, as LinkedIn develops, the Lite app falls farther behind, with the full software’s more advanced functions – such as video connection, full profile display features, Creator Mode, and so on – being increasingly separated from the streamlined tool.

And, as worldwide connectivity improves, LinkedIn believes it can move forward without the scaled-back variation, which could help increase in-app engagement and usage, as well as give LinkedIn a stronger presence in critical markets.

At the same time, the retirement of the Lite app may offer LinkedIn’s team more time to create and operate its new ‘InCareer‘ app in China, which was banned from the country in October due to increased regulatory pressure and scrutiny.

In any case, the LinkedIn Lite app will be deleted from Android app stores on January 27th, followed by its ultimate deactivation on March 15th. Over the next few weeks, LinkedIn said it will migrate Lite app users to the full LinkedIn experience.
